Building the Future
In 1898 Chas H. Carrick left Winchester for Western Australia. What followed was a civilian family story driven not by war, but by opportunity.
He arrived as the colony was being transformed by gold, railways, new ports, electric power and communications. Chas learned quickly, moved with the times and built a life around technologies that were only just beginning to reshape everyday Australia.
Motor cars took him to the goldfields. Wireless radio became his next business. Around him Perth was growing, Kalgoorlie was booming and a new Commonwealth was emerging.
Yet the story also reaches backwards: to a mysterious Carrick family plaque, a ruined Scottish castle and a family myth that refuses to die. Chas Carrick did not inherit the future. He built his place in it.
